Yahoo checks the incoming email headers whether it is legit or not and if it thinks the email is spam, it pushes that email to bulk folder. But not everything is perfect in this world ... So sometimes (or most of the times) the legit email lands into the bulk folder.
What are domainkeys?
DomainKeys is an email authentication method designed to verify the DNS domain from which the email is coming from.
Read how to enable domainkeys in cpanel.
Here are few pointers to show Yahoo that your email is legit:
* Clear IP
* SPF
* rDNS
* Domainkeys
* DKIM (new updated version of Domainkeys)
When you open your Yahoo email and scroll down the page, you will see a link 'Full Headers' on right side. Click on it. You will see the full header details.
One of the headers is 'X-YahooFilteredBulk'. It looks like:
X-YahooFilteredBulk : 11.22.333.44
It means Yahoo recognised the ip 11.22.333.44 as sending spam and blacklisted it. Even you install the Domainkeys, rDNS etc, still Yahoo pushes your email to bulk folder if it recognises the ip is blacklisted.
Reasons for this blackiliting can be:
* Previous webmaster who used that ip spammed and ip was blacklisted
* The ip is reported as sending spam by one of your subscribers
How to avoid email going into Yahoo bulk folder?
Let Yahoo know that you are not a spammer:
When you see that your ip is listed at 'X-YahooFilteredBulk' header, you can request Yahoo to remove your ip from their blacklisted database.
If your server sends bulk email, use this form:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/postmaster/bulkv2.html
If you are having trouble with email delivery to Yahoo, use this form:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/postmaster/defer.html
Enter all the information and hope for the best. Usually they respond and try to solve it. Because I did this one time. They do respond ... So be patience.
Change the IP address:
Some people are skeptical about Yahoo responding to your form submissions. So if you are one of them, go ahead and change the mail server ip which Yahoo blacklisted to a clear IP.

What are domainkeys?
DomainKeys is an email authentication method designed to verify the DNS domain from which the email is coming from.
Domainkeys are very important authentication criteria for Yahoo email. Yahoo developed domainkeys in 2007 to stop spam for their users. Any person can spoof other email addresses from other domains and send email. Ex: Some spammer can send email from his computer or server with your email address - you@yourdomain.com. This is called spoofing.
Domainkeys technology when implemented on a server sends email with an authenticated signature added to the headers. Yahoo recognizes the key in the headers and determine that the email is coming from the claimed domain.
Cpanel recently implemented Domainkeys in their hostpanel interface. Enabling domainkeys in cpanel is very easy ...
Implimenting Domainkeys in cpanel:
1. Login into your cpanel.
2. Click on 'Email authentication' link under 'Mail'.
3. Click on 'Enable' button below 'Domainkeys'. That is it!

Recently after my host upgraded the cpanel for my VPS, suddenly domainkeys stopped working and all the email going out from the server are going with 'domainkeys=neutral'. See below -
Authentication-Results: mta158.mail.ac4.yahoo.com from=; domainkeys=neutral (no sig); from=xxxxxxxxxxx.com; dkim=neutral (no sig)
I searched the cpanel forums with lot of complaints about Domainkeys not able to work ... So cpanel people know this bug and they are saying there is no FTA to release a fix for this ...
So till then downgrade to previous version of cpanel? I think this might work!

Four stages of Email marketing:
Developing a list:
This can be done by offering a free ecourse or an ezine or a free report etc. Install a mailing list software on your web site and set up a form on your site. Your visitors subscribes and confirms the subscription by double opt-in.
Maintaining a list:
Getting subscribers is not enough, but you should get the concept of list management. Like updating your subscribers with good information, giving what you have promised, respecting your subscriber unsubscriptions, managing your bounces to keep your list clean etc are part of your list management strategy.
Sending email and optimizing for Email deliverability:
Email messages out of your script can be email follow ups, promotional emails, broadcasts. You have worked hard to develop a list of 50,000 subscribers. If you send an email to them and if 50% of your subscribers don't get it, what is the purpose of you doing marketing?
Think about it ... 50% of your potential buyers ar not actually receiving your email. Email deliverability means the ACTUAL OPTIMIZATION PART OF YOUR EMAIL MARKETING THAT IMPROVES THE DELIVERY OF MESSAGES TO YOUR SUBSCRIBERS INBOX.
Email deliverability can be improved by setting up SPF record, hosting with a reputable host with dedicated ip, setting up rDNS, double opt-ins, some internal optimization of your autoresponder etc.
Achieving Your goal from your efforts:
Each email marketer has different goals on what to achieve from their list. Some marketers develop list just to sell the advertising space and earn money. Some marketers develop list to promote their affiliate products. Still some others want to promote their own service/product.
Whatever it is, you should get it from your list. This can be done by increasing email openings, offering good information, worthy sale offer, discounts etc.

Here are the few things that you have to watch out while sending email to your subscribers. Most email clients have spam filtering software installed and they zap your emails in to junk folder. These email filtering software check for the following criteria. There are many other things, but most common are these ...
Attachments:
You know many email clients see the email with attachments as spam? Yet they have a feature of sending attachments. Funny thing it is ... But as a general rule of thumb, don't try to send attachments especially exe files, ppt files, attachments with double file extention names etc.
If you need to send an attachment, send it as a download link. Upload the file to your web site and send that link in emails. Or zip the file. FIVE tips on Sending attachments with Autoresponder emails.
Javascripts:
What happened good old text messages? Further to it, adding a javascript? Most email clients block the email with javascripts, dhtml, Forms in email. They think these are malicious code in emails. Most email clients won't run javascripts or disable it by default.
Wrong html:
How many of you are sending W3C compliant html emails? If your autoresponder software has a html editor, use it. Type the html message right there in the textarea. Not paste it from another html editor. Use simple html tags.
Some marketers like to send html messages because to create brand awareness, email open tracking, look and feel of the email etc. Nothing wrong with that. But make sure your html is compliant with W3C standards. SEVEN Tips on sending Html emails.
Spam triggering words in email:
There are certain words that trigger spam filters. Ex: MLM, online pharmacy, leads, investments etc. Do a search on Google for the word - "spam trigger words". You will get a list of sites publishing these words. Ty to avoid them. Sometimes it is impossible to stop using some terms like signature, free etc.
So use them in correct context. Email clients don't think the email is junk just because they found a word 'free'. But in whole context with other content of the email.
Images:
Images, banners, flash files in emails are another main reason for considering the email as junk. Recently hotmail and other email clients stop displaying images in emails until the reader clicks on 'Display images' in the email options.
Simple opening up of the email with a .jpg file can infect your computer. So no wonder email clients block images.

Email marketers always debate about whether to allow or not to allow free email addresses in their list. A question from an email marketer -
"Many people use free email accounts to subscribe lists or autoresponders. So if I ban those emails, will my list develop as expected?" There are pros and cons as always, like any other strategy ...
Pros of banning free email accounts:
* Most responsive list.
* No email bounces.
* No complaints from host.
* Resources are used effectively.
Cons of banning free email accounts:
* Lists will not be that big.
* Sometimes you will lose real subscribers who actually don't own any web site/domain email.
List of free email accounts:
hotmail.com
yahoo.com
aol.com
exite.com
msn.com
comcast.com
gmail.com
hushmail.com
mail.com
inbox.com
myway.com
lycos.com
luxmail.com
ownemail.com
emailaccount.com
hotpop.com
mail2web.com
boredmail.com
mailwasher.net
So it is entirely up to the marketer whether to allow or not. If they allow the free email accounts they need to clean lists once in a while to stop bounces and email server clogging up.
How to keep your list clean?
* Use double opt-in while you are allowing free email accounts.
* Use your autoresponder feature llike 'Bounce management' to weed out the bounces of free email accounts and delete them.
* Delete unsubscribers and Unconfirmed email addresses.

1. Size of the Html emails:
Size does matters. If the emails are bulky, spam filters think they are spam. So they will be deleted or directed to junk folder. Better be less than 20 kb.
To make Html emails with small sizes follow these principles -
* Don't use WYSIWYG editors to create Html emails.
* Mind attachements that you will send with emails.
2. Javascripts and executable attachments:
Don't insert javascripts and those sort of things in your Html emails. They potentially decrease the deliverability of your email in to your subscribers inboxes, because people disables these in their email clients to run.
3. Html complexity:
Most of the email clients support only minimal html. Like simple break tags, paragraph tags etc. Don't use complex html code like frames, sliding menus etc.
4. Hiding and Tracking links:
Great advantage of Html emails is you can hide your affiliate links and track who opened the emails (only if images are downloadable). You can utilize this feature along with using simple html code in the emails. Email looks like text email or with minimal html tags.
5. Easy to publish on the web:
Make a template for your Html emails. So let all emails be consistent in layout. You can publish the ezines or ecourses on the web directly from Html emails. You don't have to format like in text emails.
6. Links in Html emails:
Try not to misdirect your subscribers. Best way linking is by using legit wording. Like if you are keeping the following affiliate link (example - www.affiliatesite.com/affiliate.php?idxxxx) for a search engine optimization ebook, keep this url linked to the word 'Search engine optimization strategies guide'. Don't link to affiliatesite.com This way subscribers know what they are clicking and what to expect after clicking.
7. Email clients limitations:
Not all email clients display Html emails properly. So offer a choice for your subscriber to opt for text emails in your email letters. You can also provide option for both text and html emails during subscription. So if subscriber knows that his email client won't support html emails, he will be subscribed to text emails.
